Minecraft Java on iPhone and iPad

Guide maintained by AppleJr · Updated

PojavLauncher is a launcher for running Minecraft: Java Edition locally on iOS and iPadOS. It provides a Java runtime and on-screen controls; it is different from Minecraft Bedrock Edition for iPhone. Installing the launcher does not give you a Minecraft Java license.

This page offers an AppleJr-distributed PojavLauncher No JIT build and an Amethyst JIT download. Choose the build that fits your installation method and device, rather than assuming both have the same requirements.

About PojavLauncher and Amethyst

The original PojavLauncher iOS project has been discontinued and its repository is archived. Its upstream README identifies Amethyst as its successor. The No JIT build distributed here is a separate option; it should not be taken as an official upstream release or evidence that the original project has resumed development.

PojavLauncher No JIT vs Amethyst JIT

JIT means just-in-time compilation. It can improve Java execution speed, but enabling it on iOS requires a compatible installation and debugging setup.

Upstream Amethyst documents compatible development signing for debugger-based JIT. An ordinary enterprise distribution certificate does not supply the debugging capability it needs. The Direct Install buttons above are for the No JIT build.

Compatibility and performance

  • Device and iOS: you need an iPhone or iPad compatible with the selected IPA. Upstream Amethyst lists iOS 14 or later as its minimum, but this does not establish compatibility for every modified build or later iOS release.
  • Game access: use a Microsoft account with Minecraft Java Edition access, or a supported demo option. The launcher and game license are separate.
  • Storage and network: leave space for the launcher, Java runtime, game files and worlds. Initial downloads and account sign-in need an internet connection.
  • No JIT starting configuration: start with vanilla Minecraft Java 1.12.2, a short render distance and reduced graphics settings. Increase settings gradually after a world loads successfully.

Newer Minecraft releases, shaders and large modpacks need more resources. Support in upstream Amethyst does not guarantee that the same version or mod will work in the No JIT build. Avoid allocating all device memory to Java; iOS and the launcher also need memory, and excessive allocation can cause crashes.

How to install PojavLauncher on iPhone or iPad

  1. Open this page in Safari. For the No JIT Direct Install route, use the AppleJr DNS button above first. After allowing the profile download, review it in Settings → General → VPN & Device Management and complete installation if you choose to use it.
  2. Choose a Direct Install button. Confirm the installation prompt and wait for PojavLauncher to appear on your Home Screen. Installation depends on the signing certificate being accepted by your device.
  3. Complete developer trust if requested. In Settings → General → VPN & Device Management, review the installed developer profile and follow the trust or verification prompts before opening the app.
  4. Open PojavLauncher and configure Minecraft Java. Sign in with your authorized account, select a lighter vanilla game version and allow the runtime and game files to download.
  5. Launch with modest settings. Start with a short render distance, then adjust the on-screen controls and graphics after checking that gameplay works on your device.

If you use the PojavLauncher IPA download instead, install it with your compatible sideloading tool. For Amethyst, use signing that supports JIT and enable JIT before launching Minecraft. Some methods need a computer for initial installation or pairing, even when later sessions can run without one.

Certificate availability: a DNS profile does not guarantee installation, restore a revoked certificate or prevent every revocation. If Direct Install is unavailable, a compatible IPA sideloading route may be needed.

PojavLauncher troubleshooting

Unable to Install or Unable to Verify App

Check whether the signing certificate is currently available, whether the developer profile has been trusted and whether you have enough free storage. You can try the other existing Direct Install option. A revoked or expired certificate may require a newly signed installation; repeatedly installing DNS will not renew it.

Minecraft freezes at startup or closes unexpectedly

Try an older vanilla version with no mods or shaders. Lower render distance and memory allocation, then check the launcher log for a runtime or graphics error. In Amethyst, confirm JIT is active. Keep a copy of important worlds before removing or reinstalling the app.

Low frame rate with the No JIT build

Reduce render distance and graphics effects, close other demanding apps and start with a small vanilla world. No JIT simplifies setup, but it does not promise the speed of a JIT-enabled launcher. Performance varies with hardware, Minecraft version and world complexity.

Frequently asked questions

Can I play Minecraft Java on an iPhone or iPad?

A compatible PojavLauncher or Amethyst installation can run supported Minecraft Java versions locally. This is different from the Bedrock Edition app; version support and performance depend on the launcher build and device.

Does PojavLauncher work without JIT?

The AppleJr No JIT option on this page is designed for supported game versions without enabling JIT. The Amethyst JIT option has different requirements and needs JIT for usable game performance.

Do I need a computer or jailbreak?

The No JIT Direct Install route can be completed on the iPhone or iPad without a computer or jailbreak when its certificate is accepted. Other IPA installation methods and Amethyst JIT setups may need a computer for the initial setup. Check your chosen method's requirements.

Does this include Minecraft Java Edition for free?

No. Downloading a launcher does not grant a game license. Use your authorized Minecraft Java account or a demo mode supported by the selected build.
